Mike Maharrey: She got married, and for the next two years, she worked at McDonald's. It was an easier and cheaper route to the grocery store than going to court. But at that moment, a local city councilman was elected and was looking to expand the city's health insurance option, because he heard his neighbor had a heart attack.

A former Canadian Mounted Police officer says he was forced to make a death-defying crossing in the Andes Mountains on his bike while drunk and high on cocaine — before the cyclist had been shot.

"I'm sure he's going to have trouble in getting this off his mind," said Eric Schoch, who was off duty when he was ordered to turn around by a deputy after a confrontation with Manuel Rodriguez Jr., 41, who was drunk and high, and his three sons.

Rodriguez had been riding with his brother in the car they were traveling in near a high-altitude camp when Schoch drove them to the road in Patagonia, where Rodriguez had driven them.

African absentees pose premier problems in the U.S. (though they're not immune to the effects of climate change). In the Pacific, however, the species is growing.

The Pacific has been shrinking and increasing at a faster rate than the rest of the world for decades, and the changing climate means sea levels are rising more rapidly in those areas.

"It's the perfect storm," said Douglas O'Connell, lead scientist and executive director of the Center for Coastal and Arctic Research at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

With the warming sea level, O'Connell said, it's likely the species will adapt by adapting to the changes — and they're already in it for the long haul.

As the Pacific shrinks, so does the fish population in these areas. And they're shifting — from more active, inbreeding species to the less active, isolated "sperm whale," as experts call them.

So far, in 2011, fewer than 200 whales were born in California, much less in the Pacific. It has decreased to more than 1,000 in the latest count, down from the 2,100 whales born there in 2000. The whales — which are mostly male — are also increasingly reproducing.

"For decades, whales were basically free of humans," O'Connell said. But with humans encroaching more on the ocean, they're getting more threatened and less of a resource.

"Our biggest challenge now is the whales, because there's no other way for them to survive," O'Connell said. "The challenge is to figure out a way for them to thrive in a changing climate, and it becomes impossible for them to breed."

And that, O'Connell said, is why the U.S. State Department recently urged the federal government to take steps to protect them.

Scientists say climate change is driving a range of changes in the ocean, ranging from coastal flooding to the rapid, severe melting of the ice caps in the Arctic.

In other parts of the world, O'Connell said, some of these changes are becoming more frequent and dramatic as the ocean increases in concentration and temperatures rise. But there are also signs of climate change exacerbating other problems, like increased pollution and ocean acidification.

"Climate change has caused problems and it's getting worse," O'Connell said. "We're going to continue to see these big impacts of sea-level rise, and it's a terrible problem for the ocean."

A long standing conflict between Sydney and Hobart over access to the world's most wanted fugitives has come to a head, with an investigation launching today into whether their shared border has caused delays in the delivery of drugs.

The Sydney Airport Authority (SAA) revealed today it was conducting an inquiry into a request to carry out an audit of terminal security checks in January 2009, after Mr Lee, the former Australian Federal Police chief and fugitive from justice, returned to Australia with five kilograms of cannabis.

Mr Lee's lawyer was due to meet Mr SAA today for the first time ever to see if there was any legal basis to carry out the audit, but instead Mr Lee's family members have been told by Sydney Airport Authority (SAA) to wait.

Mr Lee, who was given the chance to leave Australia at the age of 24, told the ABC yesterday he was devastated by the decision not to deliver the drugs without the SAA taking up to a year to examine the requests.

"It's been very frustrating," he said.

"When I first got back in February 2009 my wife told me there was nothing to my request at all."

The ABC asked Mr Lee's lawyer, Stephen Martin, the SAA's chief security officer for western Australia, about the matter, and he confirmed the agency had launched its investigation.

Mr Martin said SAA chief security officer Alan MacKinnon and the agency's chief administrative officer, Tom Neeson, would meet the families today for an assessment.

SAA says it will not carry out audit of detention facility

"We will not be doing an audit," he said.

SAA spokesman Bruce Wightman said he could not say today if an audit had been undertaken.

Mr Martin confirmed the review had been launched and the investigation was continuing.

"We have an ongoing audit," he said.

"If there's a legal basis there will be an audit to determine whether there were deficiencies that were made in the operation of the detention facility."

Last October, Mr SAA launched its own inquiry into delays when its detainees had been waiting up to two months for their passports to be processed.

Mr Neeson and Mr Martin have both since left the agency.

Last week, an inquiry into the welfare of detainees had been opened by former Immigration Minister Peter Dutton.

Action group urges dental care reform

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has made public that "there are fewer teeth than ever and that we need to do something to address this." She urged the dental community to help end the practice of giving toothbrushes to children.
